Guernsey
Real responsibility. International exposure. Support to succeed.
For more than 20 years, Ogier has helped aspiring lawyers to qualify as England and Wales solicitors and thrive within the firm.
At Ogier, trainees don't spend two years observing from the sidelines. From an early stage, you will have opportunities to contribute to real client work, collaborate with colleagues across jurisdictions and develop the confidence and capability needed for a rewarding legal career.
The success of the programme can be seen throughout the firm, with former trainees at every level, from newly qualified associates to partners.
What makes the Ogier trainee experience different?
Our trainee programme is designed to help you build confidence, broaden your experience and develop the skills needed to qualify as a solicitor.
Support from day one
Starting your legal career can feel like a significant step. That's why every trainee begins with a dedicated induction to help you settle in and contribute from the outset.
Throughout your training contract, supervisors, mentors, buddies, fellow trainees and development professionals will support you, with regular feedback and seat reviews helping you track your progress and build your skills.
Broad, global experience
You’ll complete four six-month seats across different practice areas, gaining experience of both contentious and non-contentious work while building the Qualifying Work Experience needed to qualify as a solicitor.
Working alongside experienced lawyers, you’ll contribute to complex, cross-border matters and collaborate with colleagues across jurisdictions.
Many trainees tell us they are surprised by both the breadth of work available and the level of responsibility they are trusted with early in their careers.
Investment in your development
Our support starts before your training contract. You will complete the SQE before joining Ogier, with the flexibility to choose the study provider that suits you. This means that when you start, you can focus fully on practical experience and developing the wider skills you need as a lawyer.
This includes:
- Financial assistance towards SQE preparation course fees
- Support towards SRA examination and assessment fees
- Pastoral support throughout the qualification process, including introductions to key Ogier contacts while you study
- Early opportunities to meet your future trainee group, build relationships and feel connected to the firm before your first day
Alongside legal training, you'll develop commercial awareness, communication, relationship-building and other professional skills that will strengthen your long-term success.
Who can apply?
We welcome applications from:
- Final-year students, preferably studying law. We also welcome applications from non-law students who are committed to a legal career.
- Graduates planning to complete the SQE
- Candidates currently studying for SQE1 or SQE2
- Candidates who have already passed the SQE and are looking to complete their Qualifying Work Experience through a structured trainee programme
Entry requirements
- A minimum 2:1 degree (or predicted 2:1)
- AAB at A-Level (or equivalent)
- Candidates who have already taken the SQE must have passed both SQE1 and SQE2
What we're looking for
We're looking for people who are curious, motivated and eager to learn.
Shortlisted applications will demonstrate thoughtful reasons for pursuing a career in law, a clear understanding of why they would like to train at Ogier, and evidence of skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation and problem-solving gained through study, work experience or other activities.
You don't need previous legal work experience to apply, but we do want to see genuine interest in the profession and an understanding of what a career as a solicitor involves.
How the programme works
Our Jersey trainee programme provides a structured two-year training contract during which trainees rotate through four six-month seats across different practice areas.
This gives trainees exposure to a variety of teams, clients and types of legal work while building the Qualifying Work Experience required for admission as a solicitor.
The application process
Successful applicants will be invited to interview with members of our trainee supervision team and Training Principal.
Offers of employment may be conditional upon the successful completion of SQE examinations where applicable.
The application window for our Guernsey Trainee Solicitor Programme is currently open.
